Telconet opens third Ecuador data center with Quito next

The eight-site, four-country buildout sits on Telconet's own fiber, and the coverage names no anchor tenant or investment figures.

Telconet has opened Telconet Cloud Center III on its Telcocity Technology Campus in Guayaquil, the carrier's third data center in Ecuador, and is already preparing Cloud Center IV in Quito, Data Center Dynamics reports in an auto-translated item from its Spanish-language coverage. The two projects continue a program the carrier had earlier flagged, one that grouped new developments in Guayaquil, Quito and Ancón with spending on connectivity and submarine cables.

The network underneath runs to more than 90,000 km of domestic and international fiber, an edge site at Anconcito, and participation in the Carnival Submarine Networks-1 cable expected to connect Ecuador, Panama, Colombia and Florida. Telconet's stated plan runs to eight data centers and edge facilities across Ecuador, Panama, Colombia and the US, with the Panama and Barranquilla, Colombia locations reportedly due live before the end of this year, though the coverage names no tenants or investment figures for any of the eight.

Against that fiber, the data-center buildout looks less like a standalone colocation venture than an extension of the carrier's own business: a building that sits on Telconet fiber and anticipates its cable landings is a new way to sell connectivity the company already has in the ground. In the capital hierarchy now splitting digital infrastructure, that difference carries a price. Facilities backed by an anchor tenant's contract clear at infrastructure multiples, while regional capacity without committed offtake competes for capital on merchant terms, and nothing in the coverage places these centers in the first bucket. Panama and Barranquilla are said to be due live within months. If those openings land on schedule, the program has money behind it; if they slip, the buildout is running ahead of the demand meant to justify it.
