Amazon plans €16bn German investment for 2027, including €4.8bn for AWS data centers

The report does not say how the remaining €11.2bn splits between Amazon Leo, Prime Video and logistics.

At a glance

25-second brief
  • Amazon plans to invest €16 billion ($17.98bn) in German infrastructure in 2027, including €4.8 billion ($5.39bn) for data centers and AI, targeting the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) region.

  • Amazon describes the €16 billion as planned 2027 spending, not capital already committed.

  • A separate German commitment sits outside the 2027 figure: €7.8 billion ($8.47bn) for AWS' Sovereign European Cloud through 2040, based in Brandenburg, which the report treats as distinct from the new pledge.

Amazon plans to invest €16 billion ($17.98bn) in German infrastructure in 2027, including €4.8 billion ($5.39bn) for data centers and AI, targeting the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) region. Data Center Dynamics reported the plan on October 20.

The data center and AI share is 30% of the €16 billion total. The remaining €11.2 billion ($12.58bn) is spread across Amazon Leo, the company's satellite internet service, a new Prime Video production slate and logistics expansion, and Amazon has not said how it divides among them, according to the report.

Amazon describes the €16 billion as planned 2027 spending, not capital already committed. It says it has invested more than €100 billion in Germany since 2010, making the planned single year roughly one-sixth of the running total.

AWS's Frankfurt footprint

AWS has operated in Frankfurt since 2014, with three availability zones and, per Baxtel, four operating data center sites and one in progress, the report said.

In June 2024 AWS said it would invest $9.44bn in the Frankfurt cloud region by 2026. In November 2025 the company was said to be looking at sites outside Frankfurt at Schöneck and Maintal in Hesse, with a two-building campus stretching 26 acres planned for Maintal.

A separate German commitment sits outside the 2027 figure: €7.8 billion ($8.47bn) for AWS' Sovereign European Cloud through 2040, based in Brandenburg, which the report treats as distinct from the new pledge.

The German data center announcement does not specify power procurement or grid capacity. Amazon has previously signed a 36MW Shetland wind PPA with Statkraft for 2030 delivery. When AWS put a 2028 delivery date on its Saudi AI Zone, the power plan behind it was still missing, as this publication noted.
