Akamai signed a virtual power purchase agreement with EDP Asia-Pacific for up to 13MW of output from rooftop solar at 27 sites in Singapore, Data Center Dynamics reported on 14 October.
All 27 sites are already operating, so the agreement is a revenue contract on working assets rather than a construction-financing milestone.
Akamai said the offtake forms part of its strategy to reach 100% renewable energy use and net-zero emissions by 2030.
Akamai signed a virtual power purchase agreement with EDP Asia-Pacific for up to 13MW of output from rooftop solar at 27 sites in Singapore, Data Center Dynamics reported on 14 October. EDP Renewables' APAC arm, headquartered in Singapore, has roughly 1.5GW of installed capacity and operates across nine countries in the region.
All 27 sites are already operating, so the agreement is a revenue contract on working assets rather than a construction-financing milestone. The portfolio can generate up to 17,000MWh a year, about a 15% capacity factor based on 13MW of capacity.
Akamai said the offtake forms part of its strategy to reach 100% renewable energy use and net-zero emissions by 2030. Singapore's Green Plan 2030 seeks to use all available space, including rooftops, to expand renewables in a land-constrained market, and the companies said the deal supports that push.
Mike Mattera, Akamai's director of corporate sustainability, tied the procurement to AI's call on computing capacity, saying the company wants renewable energy purchasing to grow alongside its distributed cloud buildout in Asia-Pacific. Last month Akamai signed a seven-year, $11.6bn agreement to lease compute to Anthropic.
