Telekom's BayArena upgrade is a neutral-host play

Deutsche Telekom has deployed a deliberately shared 41-antenna mobile network inside Bayer 04 Leverkusen's BayArena, splitting the 30,000-capacity stadium into 14 mobile sectors ahead of the new Bundesliga season. Data Center Dynamics reports that 15 antennas sit above the lower tier and 26 above the upper, the radios running LTE and 5G from 800MHz to 3.6GHz; Telekom says the split keeps performance up when the stands are full because capacity can be pushed to whichever stand needs it rather than treating the bowl as one undifferentiated cell.

With the season over, work started in May and moved quickly: industrial climbers ran five kilometers of high-frequency cable through the stadium, along with cable trays, distribution boxes, and four new operations rooms. Outside, three microcells along the main access routes create capacity for the crowds arriving before kickoff and leaving after it, and Telekom says further upgrades to the approach roads are planned. Mathias Poeten, who manages mobile network expansion at the carrier, told DCD: 'A stable, fast network is now an essential part of the stadium experience.'

The more consequential choice is architectural: other network operators can connect their own equipment to it instead of hanging separate antennas, which turns BayArena into a useful neutral-host asset. A packed 30,000-seat venue is a punishing load case for a single carrier with every fan streaming at once, and one set of radios opened to rivals spreads both the contention and the construction bill. There is no hyperscaler anchor at a stadium, so Telekom is packaging the site as shared infrastructure to make a fixed capex line do the work of several.

The BayArena build lands the same week Telekom announced a €1bn deal to buy Macquarie's Polish fiber networks. Against that purchase the 41 antennas are a rounding error, but they are the same wager: connection capacity is the product, whether it runs beneath a city or above a football terrace.
