PJM approves 2.1 GW of Engie storage and LS Power gas uprate
PJM expects the approved projects online by mid-2029; the expedited track that cleared them expires at the end of 2027.
At a glance
PJM Interconnection has approved the initial three projects in its Expedited Interconnection Track, clearing a combined 2.1 GW.
Engie IR Holdings plans an 860-MW storage project in Crawford, Pennsylvania, and an 800-MW storage project in Morrow, Ohio, while LS Power plans a 455-MW uprate at its Hunterstown combined cycle plant.
The approvals land against tight supply in PJM, where data centers are pushing demand forecasts higher.

Engie IR Holdings plans an 860-MW storage project in Crawford, Pennsylvania, and an 800-MW storage project in Morrow, Ohio, while LS Power plans a 455-MW uprate at its Hunterstown combined cycle plant. PJM disclosed the projects; LS Power bought the Hunterstown plant from Platinum Equity in 2024.
FERC approved the expedited track in June, and PJM opened the application window on July 31. Eligible projects must exceed 250 MW, carry backing from a primary siting authority and be able to begin operating within three years. PJM will consider up to 10 requests a year, and the process expires at the end of 2027 — roughly 18 months before the approved projects are due online.
The approvals land against tight supply in PJM, where data centers are pushing demand forecasts higher. PJM links the combination to sharply higher capacity costs and rising utility bills in some areas. PJM's other efforts include a pending reliability backstop procurement and updates to its surplus interconnection service rules that could let new generation use existing interconnection capacity.
