O2 tucks 24 small cells into Westminster's dense streets
The 24 nodes are a rounding error; the 2,500-site installed base makes street furniture a permanent layer of the network.
O2, formally Virgin Media O2, has deployed 24 small cells on existing street furniture in Westminster, one of London's most congested boroughs, and Data Center Dynamics reports the nodes target high-demand locations where mobile traffic strains the macro network, a capacity fix rather than a coverage extension.
The small-cell form factor makes the approach work: a unit attached to a lamppost or street pole adds density without the bulk of a conventional mast, the kind of infrastructure that can draw resident criticism and slow down deployment. In Westminster the operator is using the street scene itself as the network layer, keeping the footprint small while adding capacity where pedestrian traffic is heaviest.
The Westminster rollouts sit inside a much larger program. O2's small-cell network has extended to more than 2,500 sites across Bath, Plymouth, Bristol, Swansea and Guildford, built out with Freshwave, Mavenir and Ontix, and the London deployment falls under the £700 million ($954 million) network investment the company announced in March.
Robert Joyce, O2's director of mobile access engineering, said Westminster's mobile demand is extreme and the cells add capacity exactly where it is needed. The 24 nodes are a rounding error in a £700 million program; the 2,500-site installed base across five UK cities is evidence that street furniture has become a permanent layer of the radio network, and dense boroughs like Westminster are where that layer pays for itself.
