Moncalieri mayor halts 576MW data center application near Turin

The project, billed before the halt as Italy's largest data center application, was to occupy 270,000 sqm on a former printing works LCP bought for €9 million in 2022.

25-second brief
  • A 576MW data center application in Moncalieri, north of Turin, will not advance through the town's planning process, mayor Lorenzo Mauro said.

  • LCP bought the former ILTE industrial printing complex in Moncalieri in 2022 for €9 million ($10.1 million), originally to build a warehouse for Zalando, DCD reported.

  • The halt, as described, is conditional, and DCD reported the application could still move ahead if the municipality receives assurances that changes will be made.

A 576MW data center application in Moncalieri, north of Turin, will not advance through the town's planning process, mayor Lorenzo Mauro said.

The application was filed by developer Moncalieri Logistics and brought forward by real estate fund Logistics Capital Partners, according to Data Center Dynamics. Mauro's objections, reported by la Repubblica, turn on what the submission left out. "Several responses related to environmental factors, energy consumption, and jobs are lacking," he said. "Significant concerns about the project have emerged: I will discuss this with my majority and then send a communication to the proponents." DCD reported that councillors in the mayor's governing coalition had opposed the plan over its environmental and public health impact.

The scale attached to the plan was national: 576MW of electrical capacity, 2.9 million sq ft (270,000 sqm) of floor space and 320 permanent jobs at opening, DCD reported. This publication's earlier reporting described the Moncalieri proposal as four buildings.

LCP bought the former ILTE industrial printing complex in Moncalieri in 2022 for €9 million ($10.1 million), originally to build a warehouse for Zalando, DCD reported. The data center application would put the same plot to a different use.

Moncalieri is one of many proposals in the region. DataCenterMap counts 13 operational data centers in Piedmont around Turin, while la Repubblica reported in September that Terna had received 64 grid connection requests for 13.13GW in Piedmont, second in volume only to Lombardy. Piedmont's regional government has proposed a law to regulate new data center planning applications, intended to be more stringent than Lombardy's Regional Law No. 11/2026. One 576MW load would account for roughly 4.4% of that 13.13GW queue.

The halt, as described, is conditional, and DCD reported the application could still move ahead if the municipality receives assurances that changes will be made. Mauro said he would consult his majority before writing to the proponents.
