GE Vernova pushes UPS up the voltage chain
A medium-voltage UPS turns a rack-level safety net into a grid-smoothing asset, but it arrives late for the current AI buildout.
GE Vernova's new medium-voltage UPS, which sits between the utility feed and critical loads and pairs power-conversion controls with integrated storage to hold voltage and frequency steady, is expected to begin shipping in mid-2027, with the first project energized in late 2027, by which time most of the data centers now under construction will have already bolted low-voltage backup units into the server hall. Traditional UPS boxes act at low voltage, after electricity has been stepped down; GE's pitch is that a medium-voltage unit protects a much larger share of the facility and simplifies the downstream electrical infrastructure.
Power has become the binding constraint on data center construction, and the MV-UPS is effectively a grid-smoothing asset: a campus can present a flatter load to an interconnection, which is precisely where the industry's bottlenecks now sit. Whether operators want their stability equipment that far upstream—on the medium-voltage network rather than inside the data hall—remains an open question. GE's Electrification CEO Philippe Piron says the unit applies existing power-conversion and storage technology in a new way to meet what he calls an unprecedented scale of reliability demand.
That two-year wait means the product arrives after much of the current design cycle has already chosen low-voltage architectures, and its natural market is the next wave of AI campuses still in planning. The announcement extends a data center portfolio that already includes gas turbines, substations, transformers, switchgear, and energy management systems; GE Vernova books Supernode 3 equipment order earlier this month, per this publication's records, a storage order with no disclosed price, and the firm has also signed several supply deals with hyperscalers, including a March agreement to provide power equipment for four Amazon Web Services data centers.
The medium-voltage placement is the right wager—it turns an insurance policy for a server hall into a grid asset, which is where the power-constraint story says value is migrating. The catch is timing, and the first project energized in late 2027 will be the first clue whether the campuses still on the drawing board are willing to put their stability equipment on the medium-voltage network.
