Era4 details 1GW Newport AI campus with first GPUs due next year
The 230-acre former Liberty Steel site is slated for as many as 400,000 Nvidia Vera Rubin GPUs at full build, though the power available when the first stage opens next year is not clear.

Era4 plans to turn a 230-acre former Liberty Steel works in Newport, Wales, into an AI campus with up to 1GW of power and as many as 400,000 Nvidia Vera Rubin GPUs.

Era4 plans to turn a 230-acre former Liberty Steel works in Newport, Wales, into an AI campus with up to 1GW of power and as many as 400,000 Nvidia Vera Rubin GPUs. The first stage, called The Mill, is due online next year with the first GPUs arriving then, according to a Data Center Dynamics report published 22 October that cites the company's website.
Data Center Dynamics reported in April that the company had received planning permission and intended to install modular data center units inside existing buildings. Liberty Steel still operates a plant on the site, but the building earmarked for the data center is not currently in use. Era4 says it will keep the factory's original brick chimney as a landmark.
It is not clear from that report how much of the eventual 1GW will be available when the first stage opens next year. Era4 said the site will use "a mix of power which is responsibly sourced with long-term energy contracts that doesn't impact local community or industry," and a closed-loop system to keep water use to a minimum.
Era4 said in September 2025 that its AI platform would eventually comprise 100,000 GPUs across more than 30 locations. The Newport site alone is described as reaching up to 400,000 GPUs, and the report does not reconcile the two company figures.
Era4 has disclosed other UK projects. It announced plans for a modular AI data center in Derbyshire in November 2025 and said in December it had signed an agreement to deploy Nvidia Blackwell Ultra infrastructure with HPE direct liquid-cooled servers. A proposal in Anglesey was rejected; another in Canterbury, Kent, is proposed to run on landfill gas. Last month it teamed with Civo, which per PID's records plans 40 UK edge data centers, to launch a sovereign AI cloud.
