Eight Globalstar satellites reach orbit as Amazon deal looms
The first satellites in a 17-satellite replenishment are now in orbit, securing the emergency SOS network Apple relies on and Amazon is about to own.
Globalstar has eight new satellites in orbit. They reached low Earth orbit on the evening of August 15, riding a SpaceX Falcon 9. The company calls the mission the first of two tranches in a satellite replenishment program. The full plan covers 17 replacement HIBLEO-4 satellites, needed to keep service running as its second-generation fleet ages. Data Center Dynamics first reported the launch.
"This launch marks the culmination of years of focused work across our company to ensure the long-term continuity and strength of Globalstar's satellite network," CEO Paul E. Jacobs said. The replacement program began in 2022, when Globalstar handed MDA Space a $327 million contract for the fleet. It has since absorbed delays that MDA attributes to "certain key suppliers."
These satellites carry a narrow but strategic business: direct-to-device connectivity. The HIBLEO-4s support Globalstar's SPOT service, used by first responders and support teams, and the emergency SOS feature built into smartphones, which lets a handset reach help outside cell coverage. Emergency messaging is the first pillar of the direct-to-device market, and the least mature. Data Center Dynamics lays out the sector expectation: direct-to-device service expands over the next five years to SMS, voice, and eventually data services. This launch is the infrastructure step that keeps the emergency-SOS service alive while the rest of that market takes shape.

Why the hurry? Much of Globalstar's capacity serves Apple, which already owns a fifth of the operator. Amazon agreed to buy Globalstar in April for about $11.57 billion. The acquisition makes Amazon responsible for the existing Apple relationship. When it closes, Amazon will run a network whose anchor tenant is Apple. Its Amazon Leo division gains a direct-to-device capability that could complement — and perhaps influence — its own offering, as Data Center Dynamics notes.
Three contractors, three press releases
Three contractors split the satellite hardware, and each issued its own account. Ontario-based MDA Space assembled the spacecraft, with development, integration, and testing in Montréal. Rocket Lab supplied the Lightning Platform satellite buses. SpaceX provided the Falcon 9. In its mission announcement, Rocket Lab said it built the satellites for MDA Space and confirmed all eight made contact and were 'performing nominally' — without mentioning SpaceX. MDA's release skipped Rocket Lab. Globalstar's own statement mentioned neither.
The mutual omissions are familiar aerospace practice, but the stakes here are specific. Each supplier is looking ahead to follow-on satellites, ground stations, the Amazon Leo buildout. Investors took a favorable view: Rocket Lab shares rose about 4.3 percent on Monday.
Nine HIBLEO-4 satellites remain in final integration in Montréal. If they hit their schedule, the constellation gets its full replenishment, and the continuity case — the one Apple's emergency SOS and Amazon's purchase price both rest on — holds. If the supplier delays that already pushed this program back recur, the second launch becomes a visible test of the satellite supply chain and of Globalstar's ability to keep a promised network whole.
For private infrastructure investors, this launch shows how a LEO constellation works as an asset: heavy upfront capex, a multi-year build, capacity contracted to a short list of tenants, and a business whose entire worth sits in service continuity. The twist is who the tenants are. Once the Amazon acquisition closes, the network that keeps iPhone emergency calls connected will sit inside a company that competes with Apple on several fronts. That relationship is worth watching as the deal moves through review.
