Tata Power has announced plans to build more than 2.8GW of generation, transmission and distribution capacity aimed at India's data center sector, Data Center Dynamics reported.
The pipeline breaks into about 430MW of upcoming distribution load, 1,236MW of transmission-linked opportunities and 1,150MW of green energy capacity under active engagement.
The network work concentrates in the Mumbai metropolitan region: upgrades to the company's 110kV and 220kV lines, new receiving stations and a 400kV transmission ring.

The pipeline breaks into about 430MW of upcoming distribution load, 1,236MW of transmission-linked opportunities and 1,150MW of green energy capacity under active engagement. Those three lines sum to roughly 2,816MW.
Tata Power counts 29 active workstreams across 18 data center operators. It said it offers hyperscalers and data center developers powered land, grid connectivity, renewable energy, storage, cooling and utility infrastructure.
The network work concentrates in the Mumbai metropolitan region: upgrades to the company's 110kV and 220kV lines, new receiving stations and a 400kV transmission ring. Tata Power placed the work inside a ₹15,000 crore ($1.6 billion) Mumbai Grid Upgradation and Expansion Plan. The upgrades add transformation and transmission capacity and build in redundancy.
Tata Power operates 16.7GW of generation capacity, 7.8GW of it classified as clean energy. The Central Electricity Authority estimates AI data centers could add about 26.3GW of demand in India by 2031-32. The 2.8GW bundles wires and substations with generation, so it does not translate directly into new supply against that demand estimate.
Each of the three lines is a forward-looking measure — upcoming load, opportunities, capacity under engagement — rather than capacity in service. The structure differs from the customer-funded utility build this publication covered at Georgia Power, where a named customer underwrote the grid slot.
| Component | Capacity | Status as described |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution network load | ~430MW | Upcoming load |
| Transmission-linked opportunities | 1,236MW | Opportunities |
| Green energy capacity | 1,150MW | Under active engagement |
| Total | ~2,816MW | Pipeline |
