Next2Sun's €5m share issue tests vertical PV

A seven-figure ticket sits between seed capital and project finance; the subscriptions will show whether vertical PV clears the middle stage.

Next2Sun has launched a EUR 5 million share issue to speed up its vertical PV projects, Renewables Now reported on August 25, though the wire's visible text is a subscription pitch and the headline figure is the only hard fact on offer. No price per share, no closing date, no description of the pipeline the capital is meant to advance.

In the arithmetic of solar, EUR 5 million is a rounding error against utility-scale project finance, but for vertical PV — a technology looking for a commercial foothold rather than a gigawatt-scale rollout — the ticket fits. It is neither seed money nor project finance, the amount too large for one and too small for the other — the middle layer of equity that buys the next demonstration project and the operating data to support a larger round.

Clean-tech concepts prove themselves or disappear at exactly this stage, and the companies that clear it usually do so through a series of small, patient investments that let the technology compound. For vertical PV, whether this issue fills and what the installed projects show will determine the next wave of capital; the market's answer would be a data point for the whole niche, not just for Next2Sun.

Recent Renewables Now headlines around Nextpower's patent news and India's 27 GW solar half-year arrive with numbers but few terms; this one arrives with a number and nothing else. The coverage does not say where Next2Sun is based, who its shareholders are, or when the issue closes. All of that is absent. What is present is a EUR 5 million bet on vertical PV, and the subscriptions, when they come, will be the first real reading on whether that bet was well placed.
