Morphotonics raises €46m to print the optics bottleneck

The Dutch toolmaker's Series B is public money placed on European manufacturing capacity, and the waveguide line is where co-packaged optics either scales or stalls.

Dutch nanoimprint lithography company Morphotonics has raised more than €40 million ($46 million) in a Series B whose new investors are mostly public. Invest-NL, the European Innovation Council Fund and the European Investment Bank all carry public or EU mandates, with Ernij Next the fourth new name and existing backers 3M Ventures, Innovation Industries and BOM returning. The Veldhoven company, founded in 2014, sells manufacturing platforms rather than the parts themselves, and it says the Series B will carry it from display manufacturing into optical components for data centers. That is why a €46 million check written to an AR-glasses supplier is a data center story at all.

The platform presses patterns into a liquid resin coating using a mould and sets them with UV light, and Morphotonics claims the method reaches higher volumes at lower cost than traditional production routes. Its Cypris system, a fully automated and modular production line, is designed to mass-produce optical waveguides, and the new money funds additional capacity for it alongside hiring in engineering, commercial and customer support and work on supplier and manufacturing networks. The business today is displays for AR glasses.

Waveguides are where the bet sits: Morphotonics' own statement places co-packaged optics alongside consumer AI devices among the applications that photonics and optical systems will enable, and the tooling case is that such architectures scale only once the optical path can be printed at something close to display cost and cadence. Tooling, as this publication has argued, is where the delivery constraint now lives — supplier slots and raw materials have become the scarcer input in the buildout, with steel and staffing still binding — and a vendor that can add capacity to a stated timetable matters because that timetable is what everyone downstream is underwriting against.

The cap table says as much about the round as the technology does: public money likely operates on a different timeline than the venture backers in the round. Invest-NL senior investment manager Johan Stins said in a statement that the company had made significant progress in a short time and that the investment supports its move from technology development into broader industrial deployment. The European Investment Bank has been funding early-stage infrastructure technology, including an offshore wind study in Morocco, and its participation here reads as a wager on European manufacturing capacity in a layer that is otherwise tooled abroad.

Nothing in the raise names a data center customer, a capacity figure or a valuation; the funded item is the intent to build. Whoever prints waveguides at display economics sets the pace at which co-packaged optics arrives, which makes tooling capacity the better early thing to hold than an optical design position. The test is the first data center component announcement: a named buyer and a volume number turn this into a supply-chain fact, and a platform upgrade leaves it an option still paid for by AR glasses.
