According to Renewables Now, Hamburg has started building the hydrogen connector for the HH-WIN network, though the August 24 report carries the news in its headline and stops there—visible text a subscription pitch, and no length, capacity, cost, or commissioning date disclosed. That single firm fact is worth pausing on in the current German hydrogen cycle.
A project that has moved to the build phase has cleared whatever permitting, financing, and offtake hurdles stood between the announcement and the shovel, and it is now spending capital on steel, welding, and trenching. The HH-WIN connector looks like such a project—a municipal-scale network, judging from the name, with Hamburg itself as the actor the headline names—though the report gives no ownership structure and leaves the scale unstated, so the cautious read is the only honest one; the direction of travel is unambiguous.
Days before this report, the green hydrogen project at the Heide refinery was cancelled. One German hydrogen asset dies on paper while another starts being built in Hamburg; the net effect for the capital stack is slower, surer, and more expensive.
