Eurowind's 2.3 GW Romanian grid approval is the asset
The approval is worth more than the hardware behind it, turning a grid slot into a bankable asset.
Renewables Now reported on Aug 27 that Eurowind has secured connection approval for 2.3 GW of renewables in Romania, and the available extract carries no project count, technology split, commissioning timeline, or capital figure—only a headline and a number. In the current European buildout, that number is what matters, because grid access has displaced hardware as the scarce asset and a connection approval is not a step toward an asset but the asset itself.
Turbines and panels can be ordered on a cycle measured in quarters, while grid slots are granted on a cycle measured in years and the queue is long, so the 2.3 GW approval converts Eurowind's Romanian portfolio from a contingent pipeline into something a lender can underwrite and a transmission operator must plan around. It also forces the rest of the market to reprice the gap between a development right and a delivery obligation, because the approval's value lies less in the megawatts it names than in the position it locks in—a claim on Romanian grid capacity that can outlast any particular turbine model or panel supplier.
The news also sharpens a question the market is already circling: what development rights are worth apart from their owner. The distressed sale of Sowitec's 3.2 GW pipeline set one benchmark for that, and Eurowind's approval sets another because it isolates the grid component from the equipment.
