Enel Chile breaks ground on 100-MW Finis Terrae battery

Enel Chile has started construction on the 100-MW Finis Terrae battery, Renewables Now reports. That sentence is the whole announcement: a project name, a developer, a capacity, and then silence.
The wire offers no cost, no discharge duration, no completion date. Those omissions matter. A 100-MW rating describes a rate, not a volume; the project could hold anywhere from a few hundred megawatt-hours to twice that, depending on the hours of storage behind it. Without that number, the asset's true size is anyone's guess.
Construction starts are where storage projects stop being slideware and start consuming capital. This is that kind of moment — just not one that tells investors much about the economics, let alone the returns.
A 92-MW bookend
The start lands on a day that already marked a bookend. EDP Renewables declared its 92-MW Sandrini battery in California fully operational, per PWD's prior coverage. The capacities are near-identical, but the projects sit at opposite ends: Sandrini is done, Finis Terrae is just beginning.
Storage also threads through the rest of the day's PWD file. Sunrun and Voltus are pooling home batteries for data-center capacity, and ABB is deploying ultracapacitors to meet Irish grid rules, per PWD's earlier reports. The technologies and grids differ; the investment theme does not — paying for power that can wait.
For Finis Terrae, the terms of that payment are unknown. No offtake, no cost, no return figure has been disclosed. Until those numbers appear, the project is a name, a size, and a construction site — and no one can say whether it will become a template for Enel Chile's next storage push or remain a standalone asset. Watch for an offtake announcement, which would put a number on the revenue side. The financing will make the final call, and it is still off the record.
