Chile's renewables hit 41.9% and the grid test begins

The share of generation is a milestone; the next number is what those megawatts earn.

Renewables Now reports that renewable sources supplied 41.9% of Chile's generation in July, a figure its published extract leaves at the headline without a technology split, month-over-month comparison, or dispatch detail. That makes it a level, not a trend.

The level is the wrong scoreboard. Past 40%, a renewables share stops being a construction milestone and becomes a grid test, because the value of a solar or wind megawatt is set by whether the output can be stored, shipped, and sold at a firm price, not by whether it was generated. That is the bifurcation now defining the transition—a premium for firm electrons and grid position, commodity pricing for unhedged generation—and the distressed sale of a 3.2 GW wind pipeline in August made the same point in a different market.

Chile's 41.9% is progress, but the next number worth tracking is the capture price—what those renewable megawatts actually earn at the meter—because that is where the value in the Chilean stack is moving.
